What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?
Search engine optimization or SEO is the process of identifying the target keywords for a website and writing page copy/text and meta tags (i.e. page title, page description, keywords) that include those keywords as much as possible. It is a balancing act of writing for both humans and search engines. The process of SEO also involves creating and acquiring as many internal and external links to pages in your website.
When will I see the results of SEO to my website?
Results vary by search engine, but are rarely immediate. A good rule of thumb is to remember that results change each time your web page is reindexed by the search engines. Indexing is where a search engine spider or robot finds your webpage via a link from another webpage, then takes a snapshot of your page and meta tags. There are many variables to ranking in the search engine and no one actually knows for certain what they are. Some of the more common ones include: keyword research, page copy optimization, meta tag optimization, inbound links from external sites, internal links from pages within your site, number of websites competing for the same keyword as you ... and the list goes on.
It's important to perform continuous SEO on your web pages, but to a limit. Don't ignore it and don't obsess about it.
My recommended steps to SEO
- Keyword Research & Optimization - This initial process could take 3-5 hours for an entire site or 1-2 hours per web page, depending upon the number of keywords you want to target, the number of pages in your website and the amount of copy on each page.
- Create or update web page copy - This is where you weave your keywords into the page text while ensuring the copy flows well for the human reader.
- Meta Tag Optimization - Update the page title and page description to include your primary keywords while staying within generally agreed upon character or word limits. Meta tags don't necessarily have to flow as well for human visitors. These are the parts of your webpage that are most likely to show up in the search engine results.
- Robots, Sitemap, Indexing - Make sure you've included both a robots file (robots.txt) and a sitemap file (sitemap.xml) for your website. Human readers will never see these, but the search engines use them to your benefit. Check and document how often your favorite search engine is indexing your web pages. When you see a reindex, then check your placement for your preferred keywords. This is a way to see the impact of any optimization that you are performing on your site.
- Website Statistical Reporting - You should also view your web statistic reports monthly to see the count of visitors to your site, how many links into your site from search engines, which search engines have indexed you, what the most frequently visited pages are, what keywords people have used to find your site, and much more. You should also see if your monthly visitor count is increasing or decreasing from month to month. If your web host company does not provide statistical reports, you can attain similar information by signing up for a free Google Analytics account. Once you sign up, all it takes is adding a bit of html code provided by Google to your webpages.
- Internal & External Linking - Acquire and/or ask for links back to your site from other sites using your targeted keywords. You can create a links page providing desired link copy and url for those that want to exchange links with you. You can also submit your site to some of the many site directories on the web. You should link to pages within your own site using keywords within the body of your pages and not just through your main menu.

Meta Tags Optimization Services
Every page of your website should contain unique meta tags that are as relevant as possible to the content/text on the page. The same meta tags should not be applied to every page of your site, since this is not an effective use and causes duplicate content across your web pages -- something search engines don't like. The most important meta tags to optimize are the "title," "description" and "keywords" tags.
To begin optimization of your meta tags, each page of your website should be submitted to a meta tag analyzer tool. The feedback from the tool will provide information to help you determine the effectiveness and relevancy of your meta tags to the content on your pages. If relevancy is low, the the tags or the content of the page are tweaked until the relevancy is at a higher.
